GMO stands for genetically modifield organism. Non-GMO means a product was developed without generic engineering. But what is genetic engineering? It is any process where generic material is manipulated in an artificial way. It can be combinations of plants, animals, bacteria or virus genes that would not normally occur by nature itself.
What is the environmental impact caused by GMOs?
GMO crops are responsible for "superweeds" and "superbugs" which can only be killed with highly toxic poisons like 2,4-D. Approximately 80% of all GMOs worldwide are herbicide tolerant, which caused an increase in the production and commercialization of toxic herbicides. So far the long-term impact of GMOs is still unknown. However, once they are released into the environment they cannot be recalled.
What is the difference between Organic and Non-GMO?
The Non-GMO Proyect is an independent organization which has the objective of educating consumers, building sources of non-GMO products and providing verified non-GMO choices, while Organic certifications are provided by the govemment and set rules for how crops are grown, how animals are raised and how pests are treated.
