The real difference between Non-GMO & Organic products

Now more than ever markets are inundated with unlimited product options. From organic to non-GMO, to natural there are dozens of “healthy” food labels that can be confusing. One of the most frequently asked questions we get regarding the real difference between the well-known Non-GMO Verified “butterfly” label and the Department of Agriculture’s USDA Certified Organic seal. Asking questions like “Is organic non-GMO?” and “How do GMOs compare to organic food?” can help make better decisions of what you’re feeding yourself and your loved ones.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines GMOs as Genetically modified organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. The USDA states that certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Produce can be called organic if it’s certified to have grown on soil that had no prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest. Prohibited substances include most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Is Organic Non-GMO?

The Non-GMO label means the food product wasn’t made with GMO, but this doesn't mean it's organic. On the other side, according to the USDA the use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products. No matter where it was grown, if a product has the USDA Organic label on it, it wasn’t produced with GMOs.

How to make the right choice for you and your family?

While Organic and Non-GMO are not the same, they are both subject to strict regulatory guidelines and have gone through highly standard verification programs. That alone may provide consumers with the peace of mind they’re looking for natural and healthy grocery shopping. We believe that understanding the differences between organic vs. GMO foods will allow you to provide your loved ones with the right nutritional options.
