Nowadays people are bombarded with unlimited options of products at the grocery store, these products are filled with statements and information about the precedence and the elaboration processes of a product but most of the time we don’t even know what statements and certificates mean. Organic and Non-GMO are two of the labels that have been exponentially growing in the past decade, and we keep seeing more and more in the packaging of the products we can find at the store.
What is a Non-GMO?
GMOs are living beings that have had their genetic code altered in some kind of way. A gene is inserted into the DNA of a single cell, and as the cell starts to divide, the gene inserted spreads to every cell.
Is important to clarify that GMOs do not come from nature, which causes suspicion and doubt in the consumer on rewards the effect on their body. GMOs were mainly created to be resistant to pests and pesticides, they mainly focus on the benefit of the farmer and his crops.
A Non-GMO is a product that excludes completely GMO ingredients, but it doesn’t mean that the product doesn’t go through the conventional food products methods and processes.
What is Organic?
Is a term that describes and ensures how agricultural products are grown, processed, and produced. All organic products are intrinsically Non-GMO, in fact, a GMO goes against the organic regulations and standards of the USDA Organic, which is the most important organization that regulates the organic characteristics of products.
Essentially, all Non-GMO products are organic, but all organic products are Non-GMO. Having this clear, it’s important to know that neither Non-GMO nor Organic products are inherently more or less nutritious. To take care of your body is important to choose food options that have high fiber and essential nutrients in their content.
